The primary PE and sport premium was introduced in March 2013 to improve the provision of physical education and school sport in primary schools across England. The £150 million per year funding is provided jointly by the Departments for Education, Health, and Culture, Media and Sport (DfE, DH, DCMS). The funding is allocated directly to primary schools and is ring-fenced. This means it may only be spent on improving the provision of PE and sport in schools. In February 2014 the government committed to continue the funding until 2022.
The government have pledged to continue Sports Premium funding until 2022. It is jointly provided by the Department of Education, the Department for Health & Culture and the Department for Media and Sport. All primary schools receive £16,000 plus £10 per pupil aged 5 or over. The number of eligible children is calculated through the annual school census collected in January.
Schools have to spend the sport funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but they have the freedom to choose how they do this. Information about the Government initiative for funding sport in primary schools can be found at DfE Sports Fund.
